Spanish Words for Beginners: 100 Essential A1 Words

If you are just starting Spanish, these are the words to learn first. All 100 come from CEFR level A1 — the official beginner level of the Common European Framework — and they are ordered by frequency, so the words you will meet most often come first.

A1 vocabulary covers the survival basics: things you can see and touch, everyday verbs like tener (to have) and ser (to be), and the connector words that hold sentences together. With these 100 words you can already form simple sentences about yourself and your surroundings.

Lingular starts every new player on exactly this vocabulary. Words are introduced a few at a time during battles, and the game tracks your per-word accuracy so harder words only appear once the basics stick.

100 words ordered by frequency — lower numbers appear more often in real Spanish.

How to actually learn these words

Aim for ten words a day

A hundred words feels like a lot, but ten a day for ten days is very manageable — and daily repetition beats one long cramming session.

Master verbs in the infinitive first

Verbs in this list appear in the infinitive (tener, hablar). Learn the meaning first; conjugation patterns are much easier once the root word is automatic.

Do not skip the small words

Words like sobre (on), también (also), and mucho (a lot of) are unglamorous but appear in nearly every sentence you will ever read or say.

Turn this list into a game

Reading a word list once won't make it stick. In Lingular, every word on this page becomes a battle question: correct answers deal damage and earn XP, misses come back until you master them, and a leaderboard gives you a reason to practice daily. Free, in your browser, no download.
