Questions about spanish conjunctions

What are conjunctions in Spanish?

Conjunctions join words, phrases or clauses. Y, o, pero and porque are common examples.

When does y change to e?

Y becomes e before an i sound, as in padre e hijo. It normally stays y before a rising diphthong such as the beginning of hielo.

When does o change to u?

O becomes u before an o sound, including a silent h followed by o. Siete u ocho is an example.

What is the difference between pero and sino?

Pero adds a contrasting idea. Sino replaces something that has been rejected: no café, sino té.

Is porque the same as por qué?

Porque means because. Por qué asks why, including inside an indirect question.

Does aunque always take the subjunctive?

No. Aunque can take the indicative for a stated fact and the subjunctive for a hypothetical or backgrounded concession; the intended meaning matters.
